Happy Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day
This email is dedicated to my Mom, Elissa Hepner.

My Mom got a new piano this year - a beautiful baby grand which sits prominently in their living room.  Our old family piano - the one we danced around, pounded on, and heard our favorite songs - now sits in my brothers living room.

Last week my Mom played for an intimate group of like-hearted pianists who regularly get together and share new pieces.  This time she chose a more difficult piece and, as usual, was a bit nervous about performing.  Walking to the bench, she calms herself by imagining how she will play the first few notes.

Only this time something happened.

At some point between the first and second variation, her right hand began to shake.  The shake isn't new as the women in my family have a bit of a familial shake - handed down from grandmothers before - but this time the shake was pronounced and became uncontrollable causing my mom (who has perfect pitch and knows EVERY wrong note) to miss several keys.

As performers know, the show must go on, so she continued all the way to the 5th and final variation, the most difficult in the piece, when as quick as the shake came on, it finally released and stayed quiet to the end.

My Mom asked for help.

That night, my sister and I got an email, my Mom needed help in figuring out what 'to do' about the shake.  I've watched my Mom for years constantly doing finger exercises in order to keep her hands flexible.  I knew how important my Mom's hands are to her and
called right away.

We talked first about the "what should I do" in regards to the physical body - though eventually this led us down the path to the, "what is my body saying to me" - into the metaphysical body.  (I won't say what she found, but those hands were speaking pretty loud.)

Here's the 'cool' part that struck me the most.

I asked my Mom when the shaking happened.  It was last Sunday night at 4:30.  On that day, only 1 hour later, I was sitting at a "purple picnic" party holding a plate of purple food (think cabbage) when all of a sudden my hand started to shake more uncontrollably then ever before - to the point where I was embarrassed about food spilling and thought to myself that I need go to the doctor to have this checked.  It didn't last long but it was significant - and a bit scary.

Connections are in the space between the physical / emotional / mental.

After speaking with my Mom - and not for the first time in our relationship - I recognized the deep empathic CONNECTION that my Mom and I have.  There are those times when one feels, senses, or thinks and the other responds even a 1000 miles away.  It is a quality of our relationship ingrained in the kinesthetic and seems to come on when strong emotions (fear and love) are involved.

I am so grateful for this empathic quality that I've honed over time with my Mom, family, friends, and clients.  It allows me to connect more intimately to myself and others in ways that I don't always understand, and at times find a bit uncomfortable, and yet is key to why I offer transformative work which connects the Physical/Emotional/Mental/Spiritual bodies.

There is a connection even if we don't always understand 'how'.
